Eastern DRC, September 12, 2025 – Since the beginning of September, at least 30,000 displaced people in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have begun receiving electronic cash vouchers from the World Food Programme (WFP) to meet their basic food needs.
The initiative, an experimental program called “Chakula Sokoni” (Food at the Market), aims to enhance food security for beneficiaries while also stimulating the local economy.
The digital vouchers, which carry monetary value, allow families to purchase essential food items directly from local traders contracted by the WFP.
Key staples available include beans, rice, salt, and cooking oil. Prices are aligned with local market rates, ensuring accessibility and allowing beneficiaries the freedom to choose their preferred items.
This pilot program also seeks to strengthen connections between small-scale producers, local merchants, and displaced communities, boosting local economic activity.
About ten kiosks have been set up to showcase food products for the returning beneficiaries.
According to the WFP, if successful, the “Chakula Sokoni” program could be expanded to other regions in eastern DRC affected by food insecurity, providing a scalable model for linking humanitarian support with local market development.
